The Breakthrough Center at Battelle - An Innovation Model for R&D Business Development
Brent Badger
Abstract
In 1997, Battelle Memorial Institute established a "Breakthrough Center" where industry partners and Battelle staff could come together in interdisciplinary teams to analyze the interaction of technology, markets/users, and market trends. The aim of the Center is to facilitate new product planning and development for client companies. The Center helps Battelle customers achieve commercial successes through assisted group creativity and strategic planning. At the same time, the Center has become an innovative mechanism for business development for Battelle's own research services, an initiative which contrasts sharply with the technology-push model of technology transfer used in many research laboratories.
"Benefits to Battelle have included development of more strategic relationships with key clients, earlier opportunities for intellectual property identification, and a sounder basis for technology investment decisions."
