Articles in this issue of R&D Enterprise – Asia Pacific balance technical, cultural and strategic perspectives on demand-driven, global R&D, technology transfer and product development. Thompson provides a model for assessing and optimizing readiness at each stage of the new product development chain in organizations.
Ruparel suggests a multi-level framework, drawing from a range of disciplines, which has been proven useful in assessing the cultural compatibility, and thus likelihood of success, of international technology transfer activities.
Takanashi argues that collaborative research activities undertaken by developed countries with less developed countries in Asia must replace old models of cost-control through inexpensive labor. A longer-term view, based on an investment in knowledge-building as well as resources, will result in the development of regionally appropriate products as well as better take-up of new technologies by more affluent consumers in Asia and in other parts of the world.
Practical articles focus on tactics to enhance success of licensing from publicly funded research organizations, and commercialization of military R&D results in high-growth companies to foster regional development. We also feature an informed opinion piece on how competition law affects market efficiency.
This year has seen an increase in international events focusing on research commercialization, reflecting efforts to develop and source technology for and in global markets. Along with international issues, a common note in many events is the increasing emphasis on demand-driven R&D planning, and away from commercialization strategies of the past that focused primarily on leveraging existing technologies and technological capabilities. Two of the many significant events this year, featuring the planning, development, transfer and protection of intellectual property are profiled in this issue, and our calendar signals several interesting future events in the APEC region.
