Abstract
This article describes the political and social developments in China which led to the establishment of a national venture capital industry to stimulate technology-based companies as a strategy for economic development. It surveys the current status of the industry, describing efforts by policy makers to borrow from successful western models while fostering an industry appropriate to and reflective of Chinese cultural and social values.
